Another easy tip for people is to remove dog bowls and pet food from the exterior of their homes. If a family needs to feed its pets outside, then food bowls should not be left unattended during the day or at night. The simple act of picking up a bowl when it is not in use can significantly decrease the chances of a rat infestation. Most people just don’t have their attention called to the matter until they find out that a friend or a neighbor is dealing with an infestation. If one house in the neighborhood is struggling with a rat problem, then there is a good chance that other houses in the neighborhood are dealing with it as well – whether the homeowners realize it yet or not. Rats are sneaky and they mainly go out at night, explains the Orlando rodent control expert. Whether a person has seen a rat or not does not determine whether there is a problem. If a homeowner ever does see a rat with his own eyes, then that means he has got a bad problem on his hands. Although there are ways to decrease rat populations through exterior rodent bating, these methods of extermination are never as effective as closing off the perimeter of the home and preventing rats from entering in the first place. Poisoning outside is a horrible choice for a person who has not sealed up his home properly, which is why Shaw says that the best thing a person can do is to seal up his house before even thinking of trying to control the rat population outside with poison.
